Editing may not be the most exciting of awards, but it is crucial when it comes to ascertaining what could feasibly win Best Picture. Only one film in the last 30 years has won Best Picture without even a nomination in the editing category and that was Birdman, a film designed to have as minimal editing as possible thanks to its long uninterrupted takes.

The Father has been praised for its editing of the cinematic portrayal of a man suffering with dementia and Promising Young Woman managed to score an ACE Eddie award nomination for its editing. Despite that, neither were sure things for nominations at the Oscars.

Instead, it is Mank and Minari being the most significant films missing editing nominations which has to seriously damage their chances at Best Picture. Editing nods for The Father and Promising Young Woman can only be seen as a massive vote of confidence in those films from the Academy and along with fellow editing nominees Nomadland, Trial of the Chicago 7 and Sound of Metal, they have to be considered as the frontrunners for Best Picture.
