Oscar Nominations 2023: 8 Ups & 9 Downs
6. Aftersun Misses Out On Best Picture & Original Screenplay
One of the most ardently championed films of the entire year has been Charlotte Wells' stunning drama Aftersun, which went on to receive just a single - albeit euphoric - nomination, with Paul Mescal scooping a Best Actor nod.
But you'll find a large army of passionate cheerleaders who felt Wells' film worthy of Best Picture, Director, and Original Screenplay in the very least, if not also Best Actress for young lead Frankie Corio.
To see it nudged out of these categories by films many would judge to be inferior - looking at you again, Elvis - is disappointing, albeit not terribly surprising given the Academy's propensity to overlook smaller films without gargantuan campaign budgets.
