Oscar Nominations 2023: 8 Ups & 9 Downs
5. Judd Hirsch Gets Nominated Over Paul Dano (Best Supporting Actor)
Early on in awards season, the flag was being flown high for Judd Hirsch to get a Best Supporting Actor nomination for his small but illuminating role in Steven Spielberg's The Fabelmans.
But as the race wore on and The Fabelmans' frontrunner status cooled somewhat, many began to consider whether his co-star Paul Dano might prove a more fitting nominee.
This isn't to sling any mud at Hirsch at all, but given that Dano's work in the film feels so much more comprehensive and emotionally resonant over the course of the whole movie, it's a shame he didn't finally land a much-deserved first Oscar nomination.
Best Supporting Actor is admittedly long sewn up anyway, with Ke Huy Quan basically guaranteed a win for Everything Everywhere All at Once, but it would've been great to see Dano at least recognised with a nod.
