Oscars: 10 Films That Should Have Won Best Picture (But Didn't)

2. Saving Private Ryan

Pulp Fiction Jules Vincent Trunk
Paramount Pictures

Saving Private Ryan has been hailed as one of the best war films of all time. Spielberg delivered a powerful story which saw audiences rip through the beaches of Normandy, fields of scattered cow corpses, and crumbling towns; all with a band of men that are tormented by the atrocities of war.

Yet despite his consistent level of quality, the first-class director has always come so close to Best Picture glory with nine nominations and just one win for Schindler’s List. Unfortunately for Spielberg, Shakespeare in Love had the Academy’s precocious votes in 99’ thanks to an infamously insistent Oscar campaign led by the disgraced movie mogul, Harvey Weinstein. With Saving Private Ryan amongst Spielberg’s best and most impactful work, it is nothing more than a slap in the face that he should lose out on this award.

While Oscar awards aren’t the be all and end all of determining a good film, it is disheartening that the white-knuckle beach assault alone was not enough to secure the golden statuette.
