Oscars: 10 Worst Films Ever Nominated

7. W.E. (Best Costume Design)

we-reb The film that Madonna directed and while it€™s hard to fault her ambition, the film is a dull, dreary mess that never really sparks anything that the context of its story should create. The film stars James D€™Arcy as King Edward VIII who falls for American socialite Wallis Simpson, played by Andrea Riseborough and devotes the film recounting the true story of how King Edward VIII gave up the throne in order to be with his love. It should be intriguing, dealing with the character of Edward and his conflicts between love and power, but the film never really gives reason for the audience to care. Critical and commercially the film was a flop, with the film unable to take back even $1 million of its $29 million budget. Critics noted its dull, monotonous nature as the films downfall, but with critics praising the costume design, the award that film was ultimately nominated for by The Academy. Madonna is a talented performer, there is no question of that, but it has become clear that filmmaking just isn€™t where her talent lies. Filth and Wisdom suffered from the same problems as W.E does here and her acting abilities in Swept Away has become a point of humour than anything else. If there is one conclusion to this it may just be that W.E may be the film where Madonna decides to utilize her talents elsewhere. She won a Golden Globe for penning the song Masterpiece, that should be evidence enough.
