Oscars: 10 Worst Films Ever Nominated

8. The Time Machine (Best Makeup)

TheTimeMachine2002-Still1_CR A remake of the 1960 adaptation of the classic novel by the father of science fiction, H.G Wells and a film that is inferior in nearly every department. The films stars Guy Pearce as Alexander Hartdegen, the genius who creates aforementioned Time Machine, capable of moving forward and backwards through time at free will. The possibilities of this device are endless but the film doesn€™t really utilize them enough, allowing for good special effects to take precedence and drive the film forward rather than a solid plot. The problem with the film is that it starts out as being a quest to regain a lost love, who after Guy Pearce€™s character Alexander travels back in time realizes that each time he travels back his love was supposed to die, being a point in time that couldn€™t change. Later however, the film becomes this awkward action-thriller that completely changes the tone of the first half of the film and doesn€™t offer anything of real substance, with morality stuck on at the end to gain a conclusion. Critically panned as being too simplistic and not retaining any of the charm that the original 1960 adaptation had, the film received its only nomination for Best Makeup. A shame, as the novel is a masterful piece of work that I hope receives the adaptation it deserves in future.
