Oscars 2013: 10 Things The Academy Got Wrong

8. Roger Deakins Is Snubbed For The 10th Time

When Roger Deakins received his 10th Oscar nomination for his sublime work on Skyfall's cinematography, I thought that there wasn't anything that could deny him long-awaited awards glory, but once again, Deakins missed out on the gong, with Life of Pi's Claudio Miranda instead taking it home. Now, it's not to say that the Academy should be sentimental and dole out consolatory Oscars, but given Deakins' stature as probably the world's best living DP, and the fact he's been nominated so many times without a win, one expected they might finally cave and give the guy his due. Unfortunately, no dice. What was most surprising about it was that they instead gave the award to a film whose cinematography is largely comprised of digital effects; like just about every technical branch, they're notoriously steadfast and old-fashioned, yet instead of honouring Deakins' gorgeous, luminous visuals, they opted for something more progressive if unquestionably less deserving.
