Oscars 2013: 10 Things They Got Wrong

7. Flight Is Nominated For Best Original Screenplay

Robert Zemeckis' Flight is a good film that's blessed with one great performance that elevates it above the clear trappings of its material, and it's these trappings that suggest the film should not in any way have been nominated for Best Original Screenplay. Poring over alcoholism clichés with an unfussed efficiency, and ending in the most trite, predictable manner possible, Zemeckis' film is certainly interesting and involving, but it's the frayed edges that prevent it from being truly great; as such, it ending up nominated here is absolutely absurd. What should have been nominated? The Master and Looper were both vastly superior films script-wise, and either would have been a far superior fit.
