Oscars 2014: 10 Underdogs Who Might Get Surprise Nominations
7. Best Supporting Actress Scarlett Johansson (Her)
Scarlett Johansson scooping a Best Supporting Actress nomination for her superb role in Spike Jonze's Her would be nothing short of a miracle, as it would be the first voice-only performance to receive such a nomination. While about half a dozen critics groups were forward-thinking enough to nominate her work, the Academy's notoriously traditionalist values will likely prevent this one from happening, as has frequently caused Andy Serkis' various performance capture roles to be snubbed in recent years. As with Margot Robbie, though, the Best Supporting Actress field is one of the most wide-open in terms of the fifth slot, and a Johansson nomination here would be a profoundly refreshing statement from the Academy. Don't count on it, though.
