Oscars 2014: 10 Wins That Would Make This Year's Oscars Worth Watching

8. 12 Years A Save Wins Editing

This one could be classified under most hopeful and unlikely to happen but 12 Years A Slave winning Best Editing would go a long way as penance for the unforgivable shutout the film received in the Cinematography slot. Steve McQueen's historical drama about Solomon Northup's true story of slavery is one of the most important films to penetrate Hollywood's bubble of backwardness when it comes to black history, and it should really win as many awards as possible on March 2nd. The editing of the film could easily go unnoticed thanks to the powerhouse acting, virtuoso shot composition and the harrowing story but there's no denying that Joe Walker's cutting, especially around some of the film's longer takes, is exemplary and a key ingredient in making the picture so potent. The competition in this one is stiff. Gravity has long been slated as the front runner because it's expected to sweep up all of the technical awards, but it was Captain Phillips that won the ACE Eddie Award for Best Editing, the major precursor for the Oscar. It's a horse-race between the two, but I personally feel like they should both cancel each other out and leave room for 12 Years A Slave's more refined and compelling cuts.
