Oscars 2014: 10 Wins That Would Make This Year's Oscars Worth Watching
7. Gravity Wins Cinematography
Alright, here's one of those no-brainers that looks like Daniel Day-Lewis competing for the Best Actor. Emmanuel Lubezki is the most talented cinematographer working in the industry who has yet to bag an Oscar, not for lack of nominations. Gravity is his sixth nomination to date and his two recent losses for both Cuaron's Children of Men and Malick's Tree of Life are generally considered to be ludicrous snubs. I'd add Malick's The New World to that. So the man who should by now have three Oscars enters the race with none and an overwhelming sense of belatedness. His work in Gravity can easily be misconstrued and confused with the tons of CGI but the operatic 12-minute continuous shot that begins proceedings in Gravity is a wonder to experience thanks to Lubezki, not computers. There won't be a Oscar-ballot anywhere in the world silly enough not to have Emmanuel Lubezki marked as the winner in this category. Rather than focus on the predictability, I choose to focus on the satisfaction of seeing justice served. There may be only one other person in the room on March 2nd who deserves an Oscar as much as Lubezki does.
