Oscars 2014: 17 Unfair Snubs The Academy Got Completely Wrong

5. The Wolf Of Wall Street €“ Best Film Editing

There was many murmurs doing the rounds before The Wolf of Wall Street had even been screened to anyone about how badly Martin Scorsese and long-time editor Thelma Schoonmaker were struggling to bring the film down to a palatable runtime before its proposed release date, to the point that many expected it to be pushed into 2014. Fortunately this happened not to be the case, and The Wolf of Wall Street was a critical and commercial hit (albeit not without its controversy), in large part due to Schoonmaker's incredible skill at making a 179 minute runtime completely fly by. Given how well-publicised this was and how respected Schoonmaker is in the industry, it's a real shock she wasn't considered a major threat here, with the comparatively simplistic (in terms of editing) Dallas Buyers Club instead making the cut (pun intended, sorry) instead. Schoonmaker no doubt had the toughest editing job of anyone considered for a nomination this year, and she deserved to be in the running accordingly.
