Oscars 2014: 18 Sublime Moments That Define Best Picture Nominees

17. There's Nothing To Apologize For - 12 Years A Slave

Soon after Brad Pitt - in one of the most miscast roles of all-time - saves the day, Solomon is once again a free man, discharged from the horrors and abuse he had been subjected him to. That was an uplifting moment in its own right, but the homecoming itself made for one powerfully emotional punch. Immediately after entering the door, Solomon takes one hard stare at his family - realizing that his daughter is all grown up, married, and has given birth to his grandchild - before bursting into tears and apologizing for his disappearance profusely, even though his family insists that there's no reason to apologize. Solomon has a lot of catching up to do with his family, but the ultimate take away here is that he has been reunited with his family in this hugely emotional bittersweet ending. On another note, this is the scene to point to whenever making a case that Chiwetel Ejiofor deserves the Oscar for Best Actor.
