Oscars 2014: 18 Sublime Moments That Define Best Picture Nominees

18. Hanging Solomon - 12 Years A Slave

For a little over two hours, Solomon Northup essentially runs the gauntlet of torture in Steve McQueen's harrowing depiction of slavery, but one scene in particular is so cruel and inhumane that it's nearly impossible to watch without feeling an urge to look away in discomfort. The scene in contention is of course the hanging of Solomon. Steve McQueen is a master of filming scenes that fearlessly depict brutality, and this is no different. For what feels like an eternity - but in reality is around two minutes - the camera lingers on Solomon as he is utterly helpless, choking, yet barely still able to stay alive, as his feet are touching the mud below. To add insult to injury, other slaves begin entering the scene in the background to go about their daily routines, but ignore Solomon; they're simply numb to such a horrific act. There is one lady that gives him some water, but that's it. Furthermore, who would even want water in a situation where they are literally being hung and gasping for air? Nevertheless, it's an unforgettable scene that defines how harsh the film can be to watch.
