Oscars 2014: 9 Hilarious Scenes From The Best Picture Nominees (And 1 That Fails Miserably)
7. Richie Is Freaking Out - American Hustle
I'll admit that it took me two viewings to really get why a lot of critics fell in love with American Hustle. Even still, love is such a strong word. It's just too all over the place for my tastes. As is usually the case with David O. Russell's movies of late, his actors really save the day and American Hustle is no different. Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence take shots off of each other with the bubbly dialogue like they're at a Jordan Belfort yacht party. If memory serves correct, Cooper and Lawrence are the only ones who don't have a sizzling one-on-one scene, but the others are all paired up on one occassion or another. When Cooper and Adams get together, champagne pops. As the overzealous FBI agent Richie DiMaso, curly-haired Cooper is let loose to improvise and take scenes to places they were probably never meant to go. The great thing is, it usually works super well. One example is when Sydney (Adams) reveals that she's been faking her British accent all along and that her name is actually Sydney. "You are... freaking... me... out," says a startled Cooper and you instantly know that nobody could have delivered that line any better. He's so serious about it you can't help but laugh. A lot. The scene just takes off from there and thanks to Adams is made even funnier.
