Oscars 2014: Predicting 10 Best Picture Contenders For Next Year

6. Saving Mr. Banks

Don't expect too much grit from Saving Mr. Banks, the impending Walt Disney biopic that just might return Tom Hanks to the level of credibility he achieved in the mid-90s with classic performances in films such as Forrest Gump and Philadelphia. Hanks has been in something of a tailspin recently, and he could certainly use the push; the real question mark is whether director John Lee Hancock, best known for his Best Picture-nominated The Blind Side, can reign in the cloying sentiment and make something that genuinely affects audiences rather than manipulates them (but hey, that worked last time). Concerned with the efforts of author P.L. Travers (Emma Thompson) to get her novel Mary Poppins made into a movie, the film will no doubt stir up plenty of nostalgia if played right, and with a supporting cast including Paul Giamatti, Jason Schwartzman and Colin Farrell, there's plenty to be excited about.
