5. Gravity

Easily my most anticipated film of 2013, Alfonso Cuaron's Gravity could very well compensate the director for missing out on Best Director/Best Picture nominations for his stunning 2006 sci-fi film Children of Men. Though the film stars veritable A-listers George Clooney and Sandra Bullock as two surviving astronauts trapped on a damage space station, we all know how little regard the Academy has for science fiction, and given Cuaron's tendency towards deliberate drama, it could end up that this ambitious film is simply too minimalist for the Academy. That said, Warner Bros. must think they have something special in the bag, given the $80m budget and the fact that it's going to be released in IMAX 3D in October. An
early review from someone claiming to have seen an incomplete cut heavily praised it, and we can only hope that it lives up to this considerable potential.
