Oscars 2014: Predicting 10 Best Picture Nominees
6. Foxcatcher
Speaking of high batting percentages, director Bennentt Miller is batting a perfect 1.000 thus far in his young career. His previous two feature films, Capote and Moneyball, both received Best Picture nominations along with many other awards and critical plaudits, so all eyes are on his third feature film, Foxcatcher.
The film chronicles the fascinating true story of John du Pont, one of the wealthiest people ever to be convicted of murder. Du Pont apparently was a paranoid schizophrenic, as well as an avid wrestling fan, and ended up killing his friend and former Olympic wrestler David Schultz before locking himself in his mansion for two days negotiating his terms of surrender with the police. It sure sounds like the stuff Oscars are made of.
Interestingly, comedian Steve Carell stars as Du Pont, with Mark Ruffalo, Channing Tatum, and Sienna Miller playing key roles as well. It should be captivating regardless of its ultimate fate with the Oscars, but I think its chances are pretty good.
