Oscars 2014: Predicting The Winners

Best Foreign Language Film

Will Win: The Great Beauty Should Win: The Hunt Surprise Win: The Hunt Another disgrace this year is that Wadjda hasn't been nominated. Not only one of the best films of the year, but even a nomination would have been significant, considering its country of origin and the background behind it. Wadjda was not only a delightful drama but a milestone in Saudi Arabian filmmaking for being the first film in the country directed by a woman. So it seems rather obvious that Italy's entry, The Great Beauty, will win this year- the academy go crazy for Italian fare once in a while, and this half-decent Fellini pastiche will probably take home the award without any serious competition. It was a nice surprise to see The Hunt in here, since it seems a distant memory for us here in Europe. A great film with a solid central performance by Mads Mikkelsen. Scandinavia dominates our television screen with top-notch fare, so why shouldn't it be the same with their films? The Hunt should win, and could be the surprise contender to rob The Great Beauty of the Oscar.
