Will Win: Gravity Should Win: Gravity Surprise Win: The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Perhaps the biggest no-brainer of the ceremony- this is definitely going to win! Gravity has represented technological advancements in its fields and developed filmmaking technology for future production and future filmmakers, so as well as demonstrating the best visual effects out of the year's films, it has also made a contribution towards Cinema's future. The other contenders are the usual blockbuster fare... The much-improved second chapter of the Hobbit trilogy could be the surprise win if for some reason the voters don't favour Gravity. The character work on Smaug was incredible; Weta always lead the way along with ILM; the work on River Town was gorgeous- so if anyone's going to upset Gravity's chances, might as well be a stellar example of VFX at its best.
