Oscars 2015: 10 Biggest Surprises From The Ceremony

10. Plants In The Audience

Audience involvement is a tricky part of stand-up comedy to get right, but every year at the Oscars the host seems to go all in. Who can blame them when the audience is a selection of Hollywood royalty? As you'd expect, big interaction set-pieces, like last year's pizza order or Twitter-breaking selfie, normally leave those getting picked on look a little bemused, only just about going along with the flow. Not so this time around, however. From the moment Benedict Cumberbatch was caught swigging from a hip-flask in the opening number, it was clear Neil Patrick Harris had paged some of the stars ahead of time. And so it continued, with various actors seemingly called upon ahead of time to take parts in various jokes. Works a lot better than Ellen's ad-libbed stumbling.
