Oscars 2016: 20 Biggest Best Film Contenders

18. The Big Short

The Big Short is a thoroughly bizarre proposition on paper. It's a film from Anchorman director Adam McKay, starring Steve Carell, but it isn't a comedy. In fact, it's a drama set around the time of the 2008 financial crisis, focused around a group of small-time players in finance who predict the crash of the housing market and decide to essentially bet against the American economy. Early praise from reviewers hotshotted the project into an awards season release date. Out of nowhere, The Big Short has crept into Oscar contention, bolstered by its strong reviews and multiple nominations from SAG and the Golden Globes. The cast is packed with A-listers with major awards pedigree, including Christian Bale and Brad Pitt, which could see the film popping up in several of the major categories. With that in mind, plus a script that balances wit with topical drama, it wouldn't be a massive surprise to see The Big Short sneaking into the list of Best Picture nominations.
