After being nominated for a Director's Guild of America award, it was a huge shock that Ridley Scott didn't get a Best Director nod for his superb work on The Martian, his spot instead being taken up by the unexpected nomination for Lenny Abrahamson (Room). It's all the more sad when you consider that Scott, at the age of 78, will struggle to get another chance at a Best Director Oscar, and though he probably wouldn't have won anyway, for him the nomination would have essentially been the win. Plus, the fact that the Academy nominated Thomas McCarthy for his rather TV-esque direction of Spotlight over Scott's sublime work is just jaw-dropping. And though it's well-deserved, consider that the director of Anchorman and Step Brothers, Adam McKay, is now a Best Director nominee for The Big Short. What do you make of the 2016 Oscar nominations?
