Oscars 2017: 8 Ups And 6 Downs

3. In Memoriam

The Best Picture mix-up was the most awkward moment of the night, but it wasn't the first instance of inducing more than a few cringes.

During the In Memoriam section, a particularly hard watch this year after the many losses of 2016, tribute was paid to costume designer Janet Patterson. All well and good, given Patterson was a multiple Oscar nominee and a sad loss to the industry... except that picture isn't of her. Instead, it's an image of Australian producer Jan Chapman, who is very much alive.

The section also egregiously missed out trans actor Alexis Arquette, for reasons that aren't particularly clear. It was surely just an oversight, but given what's been happening in the U.S. recently it's a very big one.
