Oscars 2017 Nominations: 15 Shocks & Snubs

3. Shock: A Michael Bay Movie Got Nominated

Suicide Squad Joker Oscar
Paramount Pictures

You might not realise it, but Michael Bay's movies have been nominated for 17 Oscars over the years (winning just one, for Pearl Harbour's sound editing), almost exclusively in the Sound and Visual Effects categories.

This includes this year's nod for his war flick 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi, which appeared to edge expected nominee Deepwater Horizon out of the running.

It's always at least slightly amusing to see a Michael Bay movie end up in awards contention, even if it's hard to argue with the technical precision of his movies, and 13 Hours in this case absolutely deserves to be in the field.

The Academy can be a judgemental sort, though, and can't always separate a movie from its construction...hence why Transformers: Age of Extinction was the only Transformers movie not to get any nominations (and was not-so-coincidentally the most unbearable film in the series).
