Oscars 2017 Nominations: 15 Shocks & Snubs
8. Snub: Hell Or High Water (Best Cinematography)
Giles Nuttgens' gorgeously bleak cinematography helped Hell or High Water juxtpose rural beauty with a troubled post-recession America in extremely memorable fashion.
Somehow, Greig Fraser's undeniably good but ultimately forgettable work on Lion made the final cut in this category while Nuttgens' superb lensing was snubbed. It just doesn't make any sense.
Sure, this is always a competitive field full of heavy-hitters, but the other nominees (Arrival, La La Land, Moonlight and Silence) all totally make sense. At least the neo-western scored four nominations overall, which is at least a few more than most were expecting at this point.
