Got Right...

5. The VFX Surprises

As expected, The Jungle Book, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and Doctor Strange were all nominated in this category - and all very well deserved too.

But while the expectation had been for the category to be rounded out by the likes of Arrival and Fantastic Beasts, the Oscars instead went with Deepwater Horizon and, even more surprisingly, Kubo and the Two Strings.

It's hard to argue with their nominations, and both were said to have seriously impressed when they showcased the VFX reel, but neither are particularly big, well-known movies, and it's a category that can often favour the major blockbusters. Kubo's isn't just deserved, but it's also the first time this century (!) that an animated featured has been nominated in this category. That's some achievement.
