Oscars 2017 Nominations: 5 Things They Got Right (& 4 They Got Wrong)

3. Scorsese And Silence Overlooked

On a purely subjective level, I struggled a bit with Silence. A big part of this is that as an atheist the film isn't really 'for me', and it's incredibly unyielding in its approach to religion.

More objectively, though, it's still an impressive achievement from Martin Scorsese - and one he's been trying to bring to the screen for decades. The sheer scale and scope of what he's attempted is astonishing, and it's hard to feel like it hasn't been unfairly overlooked in a number of categories. The Cinematography nod is well-earned, but that's the only one it got - meaning it has the same number of Oscar nominations as Suicide Squad, and less than Passengers.

Costume Design, Production Design, Editing, and most of all Director are all areas where Scorsese's epic would've been worthy of a nomination, and he and his team can be feeling hard done by here.
