Oscars 2017: Who Should Win Every Award (And Who Actually Will)

18. Achievement In Sound Mixing

Oscars Casey Affleck Denzel Washington
Summit Entertainment

Nominees: Arrival, Hacksaw Ridge, La La Land, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, 13 Hours

Who Should Win

La La Land.

Just listen to it. La La Land does a great job of blending the various sounds that we hear into one joyful mix, perhaps best evidenced in its opening number, which turns the cacophony of LA freeway traffic into a solo into a huge ensemble number and back again. It's totally immersive, and helps ensure that the musical plays out like a film, rather than a stage production.

Who Will Win

La La Land.

Musicals often play well in this category, and that should be the case again here, though the war movies could give it a run for its money. But La La Land sounds so good it's hard to ignore here, and it's one voters will automatically be drawn to.
