Ahead of the Academy Awards, Chadwick Boseman presents mounds of evidence to show why he's an essential candidate for Best Actor. His rendition of Thurgood Marshall makes a statement even though his character isn't granted permission to speak in court.

Marshall premiered in October and critics never fail to mention the potent power of Boseman's steely lawyer. If this is the case come February, the thespian behind the Black Panther could be celebrating the comic book movie's release and a nomination. Marshall wasn't a box office hit but the reverence for Boseman's breakout role keeps him in good standing.

Boseman's filmography is full of well-regarded biopics but he's sat on the Oscar sidelines for some time. Get On Up evaluates the gritty trials of James Brown and Boseman doesn't object to depicting the musician's darker tendencies. He then stepped up to the plate as Jackie Robinson in 42, breaking down barriers for black baseball players. Neither movie led to Bosman being a party of interest in awards circles.

However, Marshall stands apart as a courtroom drama. The Academy loves this particular genre and it's no guilty pleasure to vote for them when nominations roll around. From To Kill A Mockingbird to Erin Brockovich, legal motion pictures have a time-tested history of achievement. At least eighty-five nominations are linked to courtroom movies and the prospect of Marshall joining them looks excellent.

The jury's out on whether Boseman can best his competitors for a nomination but the judgment of critics should seal the deal.

Monique Hayes hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
