Oscars 2018: 8 Most Game-Changing Nominations

8. The Boss Baby - Best Animated Feature

The Boss Baby's nomination didn't come completely out of left-field, since there's a smaller pool of animated features to choose from than live-action, but it is still something of a shock given the movie's quality - or lack thereof.

The film is the worst to be nominated in this category - which is usually quite strong, and last year was ridiculously so - for some time, and it's also hard to remember a bigger gulf in class between a nominee and the frontrunner (Coco).

The Oscars nominating a bad film isn't itself a game-changer, but - when there were better candidates, namely The LEGO Batman Movie, The Girl Without Hands, or Mary and the Witch's Flower - it's either a blip or a shift towards something more populist (The Boss Baby grossed considerably more than either of those films), or perhaps a sign that any old sh*te can be nominated in this category. If nothing else, it's confirmation that the Academy really hates Lego, though we can just be thankful it wasn't The Emoji Movie.
