4. Best Visual Effects: Blade Runner 2049 Beats War For The Planet Of The Apes

The precursors made this one painfully obvious, but it was still a damn shame to see War for the Planet of the Apes fail to win the Best Visual Effects Oscar, meaning that all three Andy Serkis-starring Apes movies have lost the award.

Yes, it lost to Blade Runner 2049, which was a monumental visual achievement in and of itself - especially the stunning digital creation of Sean Young's Rachael - but Weta Digital's renderings of Caesar and Maurice might honestly be the most staggeringly lifelike and convincing CGI creatures ever put to screen.

That the trilogy never once managed to win an award it seemed so easily destined for is nothing if not a baffling embarrassment for the Academy.
