Oscars 2018 Nominations: 18 Shocks & Snubs

2. Shock: Phantom Thread Scores Six Nominations

Though there was never any doubt that Phantom Thread would land nominations for Best Actor (Daniel Day-Lewis) and Best Costume Design, the film massively overshot most expectations by scoring additional nods for Best Supporting Actress (Lesley Manville), Best Original Score, Best Director (Paul Thomas Anderson) and even Best Picture itself.

Given Anderson's tendency to polarise Oscar voters, his success here was never a sure thing, but he clearly benefited from the passionate support of his dedicated fans in the industry.

While the film is unlikely to win anything beyond Best Costume Design, it's still great to see one of the year's most singular and fearless dramas be recognised for its efforts.
