Oscars 2018: Predicting All The Nominees

8. Original Score

The Shape Of Water Sally Hawkins
Fox Searchlight

There are some truly heavyweight contenders in the mix this year, including Alexandre Desplat (1 Oscar win from 8 nominations), Hans Zimmer (1 win from 10 noms), Thomas Newman (14 noms yet no win), and of course John Williams (5 wins from a staggering FIFTY nominations), who could get recognised for either The Post or Star Wars. They're the kind of names voters could just easily tick off, and at least three should make their way onto the nominations list (Newman might fall victim to Victoria and Abdul going under the radar).

Jonny Greenwood has been knocking on the door for a decade now, with his work on There Will Be Blood and The Master overlooked, and his latest PTA collaboration could be the one to see him through it. Past-winner Dario Marianelli (Atonement) could get in too for his work on Darkest Hour, since the Academy seem to love his team-ups with Joe Wright.

Nominees:

Alexandre Desplat (The Shape Of Water)

Jonny Greenwood (Phantom Thread)

Dario Marianelli (Darkest Hour)

John Williams (The Post)

Hans Zimmer (Dunkirk)

NCTJ-qualified journalist. Most definitely not a racing driver. Drink too much tea; eat too much peanut butter; watch too much TV. Sadly only the latter paying off so far. A mix of wise-old man in a young man's body with a child-like wonder about him and a great otherworldly sensibility.
