But then to be fair, who is? Nelson's son Lukas served as a music consultant (and also appears in the movie as a member of Jack's band) and spent months working with Cooper on his musicianship. Ultimately, however, there's only so much one can do trying to turn an actor from Philly into a Nashville legend.

According to an interview with Rolling Stone, Cooper spent nearly two years prepping for the role and no doubt should be commended for his unwavering commitment. In the film (which he also co-wrote, directed and produced) he does his own singing and some of his guitar playing (but 100% of his own air guitar).

Cooper follows in the footsteps of a long line of actors (Bruce Willis, Dennis Quade, Kevin Bacon, Jared Leto) who've moonlighted as rock stars. It's also noteworthy that Kris Kristofferson, who starred in the previous version of ASIB, had been a country music star before focusing his talents on acting.
