Oscars 2020: 15 WTF Moments

13. Gary Glitter Gets An Oscar "Cameo"

Joker Joaquin Phoenix
Warner Bros.

As is customary for the Oscars, a clip of each of the Best Picture nominees is played throughout the night, though somewhat misguidedly for Joker, the Oscar producers opted to show the undeniably iconic scene where Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix) dances down some steps.

Except, as has been called out numerous times since the movie's release, the use of Gary Glitter's "Rock and Roll Part 2" in the scene is ignorant at best, given Glitter's well-noted convictions for child sexual abuse.

Though Glitter reportedly didn't receive any royalties from the song's use in Joker, it's still pretty iffy that the Academy could've literally picked any other 20-second snippet from the movie, but bafflingly opted to stick with this problematic one instead.
