Oscars 2020 Nominations: 16 Biggest Shocks, Snubs & Surprises
13. Snub: Willem Dafoe (The Lighthouse) & Song Kang-Ho (Parasite) - Best Supporting Actor
Best Supporting Actor is unquestionably one of the most competitive categories this year, and there's certainly little point arguing against the nominations for Tom Hanks (A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood), Al Pacino and Joe Pesci (The Irishman), or Brad Pitt (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood).
But giving the fifth slot to Anthony Hopkins, who doesn't even try to disguise his distinctive Welsh twang in The Two Popes, does feel like a bit of a lazy choice, especially with so many more interesting and adventurous performances to choose from.
Case in point, Willem Dafoe's arguably career-best work in The Lighthouse was a criminal ommission, and it also would've been fantastic to see Song Kang-ho make the five for his splendid performance in Parasite.
At least the category is incredibly solid overall, yet it could've been an all-timer if Dafoe in particular had made the cut.
