Oscars 2021: 10 Actors Likely To Get Their First Oscar Nomination This Year
5. Amanda Seyfried - Mank
David Fincher's return to the big screen was met with divisive reactions from audiences and critics alike as Mank revealed itself to be a slightly messy and rather heartless tale of the man who wrote Citizen Kane. A technical masterpiece, it was the characters that were lacking as most everyone in the film seemed largely unlikable and generally intolerable.
Surprisingly enough, that is what will help Supporting Actress hopeful Amanda Seyfried the most. Starring as fading film star Marion Davies, Seyfried feels like the only character with a conscience and brings a light and enjoyable presence to an increasingly sombre narrative.
The Mamma Mia! star has generally avoided films that would beckon awards attention (with the exception of Les Misérables) as she has continued to be one of Hollywood's most underutilised talents. In Mank, she is given great opportunity to shine and is most exceptional when she is conveying how she feels without saying a line of dialogue.
Unlike other performances on this list where actors will have to contend with their co-stars to stand out, Seyfried is benefitted by being the shining standout in a film of otherwise well performed but dreary characters.
