It is incredible to think that Shaun the Sheep originated from a one-off Wallace and Gromit character, appearing in 1995's A Close Shave for about 10 minutes of screen time, and is now the star of his own incredibly successful series.

Having outgrown his kid's TV series, Shaun the Sheep made the logical step to film with the simply titled Shaun the Sheep Movie which garnered praise and an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature. Skip ahead five years and A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon is playing across the country but perhaps not with the same cultural significance that the first one received. This is what made its Oscar nomination for the same award this year baffling.

Failing to land a nomination on its home turf at the Baftas or at the Golden Globes, seeing that familiar sheep nominated for its sequel was as much a pleasant surprise as a summation at the real lack of animated films on offer at the moment. While it may be a head scratcher its nice to have a British nomination for Best Animated Feature among the larger American Pixar films.

An avid cinephile, love Trainspotting (the film, not the hobby), like watching bad films ironically (The Room, Cats) and hate my over-reliance on brackets (they’re handy for a quick aside though).
