Oscars 2021 Nominations: Biggest Surprises And The Worst Snubs

1. What The Hell?!: Eurovision Song Contest: The Story Of Fire Saga - Best Original Song

The last time a comedy song was nominated for an Oscar was The Lego Movie's 'Everything is Awesome' back in 2014. And while technically this entry for Best Original Song, entitled Husavik (My Hometown), is a more down the line ballad about this Icelandic town it was still written for comedy film Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga.

This 2020 film starring Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams as the Icelandic representatives for the Eurovision Song Contest was a mixed affair at best. In its favour were the good performances, notably McAdams who was able to show off her comedic side and with a star turn from Dan Stevens as flamboyant Russian singer Alexander Lemtov. However, the film was ultimately a fairly forgettable and bog standard offering from Ferrell who also took a hand in writing the screenplay.

Seeing the film rewarded with an Oscar nomination was a shock to most and maybe demonstrates what a rather weak year it was for Best Original Song. In a film which features some more bonkers songs including Volcano Man and Jaja Ding Dong, it would have been nice to see them nominated over a fairly boring power ballad.

An avid cinephile, love Trainspotting (the film, not the hobby), like watching bad films ironically (The Room, Cats) and hate my over-reliance on brackets (they’re handy for a quick aside though).
