Oscars 2021: Predicting Winners In EVERY Category
5. Best Supporting Actress: Yuh-jung Young
Similar to Best Supporting Actor the names buzzing around the awards circuit for Best Supporting Actress are rather uninspired this year. This speaks mainly to the quality of supporting roles available to women in the film industry rather than the performances that were given.
One of the favourite names is Oscar-winning Best Actress from The Favourite: Olivia Colman who shows her range once again in The Father as she plays the supportive - in every sense of the word - daughter of the titular character. Another name that received early buzz was Amanda Seyfried for her portrayal of iconic silent era actress Marion Davies in Mank, an example of bringing a classic Hollywood legend to life which the Academy loves (see Cate Blanchett's Oscar-winning turn as Oscar-winner Katharine Hepburn in The Aviator).
However, one name that could surprise everyone with a win is Yuh-jung Youn for her performance in Minari, a role which has just won Youn her 20th award for the role described best as the 'spiky grandmother'. While a nomination for the 73-year-old actress looks incredibly likely whether she will actually pick up the coveted Best Supporting Actress Oscar as an unknown in America against established Hollywood names remains to be seen.
