Oscars 2021: Ranking The Nominated Performances From Worst To Best
9. Yuh-jung Youn - Minari
A renowned Korean actress with many credits to her name makes a definitive splash in Hollywood as the scene stealing grandmother in Lee Isaac Chung's Minari. Yuh-Jung Youn is a whacky and fierce addition to the film who, along with Alan Kim, provides some of film's sweetest and most hilarious moments.
The critical favourite amongst the supporting actress nominees, Youn is the likeliest to win now that nominees such as Maria Bakalova and Glenn Close have failed to solidify their momentum. Youn is fantastic as the grandmother who is anything like what the Yi children were expecting from a grandmother. Foul mouthed and a player of cards, Youn's building bond with Alan Kim's David is one of the most enduring relationships of the whole film.
Originally seeming like the most unpredictable category of the year, the conversation has appeared to converge on Youn and she would be a deserving winner as the veteran actress pushes the emotional limits of the wholesome drama in all the best ways.
