Oscars 2021 Results: All The Major Winners (And Who Should Have Really Won)
9. Best Animated Feature - Soul
The Best Animated Feature trophy was a sure bet for Pixar's Soul, a film which offered a glimpse into the world of jazz and the incredibly imaginative realm of the Great Beyond. Alongside sweeping up the Golden Globe and Bafta for Best Animated Feature, the other nominees ultimately struggled to get the same level of buzz (including fellow Pixar film Onward) that Pete Docter's animated film was able to drum up.
Predicted winner: Soul
Soul has been the favourite to win for Animated Feature since it dropped on Disney+ on Christmas Day, so predicting it would triumph back in January was a no brainer. Bringing on board Kemp Powers as a writer (and later hastily labelling him as 'co-director' too) was an inspired choice to give an authentic voice to Pixar's first African-American protagonist.
Rightful winner: Wolfwalkers
While Soul managed to tug on the heartstrings and provoke some questions about existentialism (albeit manufactured by Pixar's tried and tested 'writing by committee' process), it would have been refreshing to see small Irish animated film Wolfwalkers take the Oscar. True, Wolfwalkers was released by equally gigantic company Apple, but this Irish film feels a lot more personal and unique than this latest Pixar offering.
