8. Best Original Screenplay - Promising Young Woman

After a late surge Promising Young Woman ultimately took home the trophy for Best Original Screenplay. After stiff competition from screenwriter veteran Aaron Sorkin's The Trial of the Chicago 7, Emerald Fennell accepted the Oscar (which she noted was 'so heavy' and 'so cold') while holding back tears. She thanked the crew for getting the film done in an incredibly tight 23 days which she notes she was 'crossing her legs' throughout, due to being very heavily pregnant.

Winning the Golden Globe for The Trial of the Chicago 7, it looked like Sorkin would be scooping up all the awards for Original Screenplay. In what was largely considered a 'safe' film compared to the 'controversial' offering that was Promising Young Woman, many thought the Academy would favour previous Oscar-winner Sorkin. How wrong they (and I) were...

Rightful winner: Minari

While both Promising Young Woman and The Trial of the Chicago 7 are worthy winners, Lee Isaac Chung's Minari painted a beautiful and extremely honest exploration of the American Dream. With a healthy balance of humour and heart, Chung used Minari to tell his semi-autobiographical tale and it was truly a shame that he was not recognised for his stellar script.
