Oscars 2021 Results: All The Major Winners (And Who Should Have Really Won)

3. Best Actor - Anthony Hopkins

Nomadland 2021
Sony Pictures Classics

Wow, again. Anthony Hopkins caused the biggest upset of the night with his win for The Father, beating favourite Chadwick Boseman who was nominated for Ma Rainey's Black Bottom. The Oscar for Best Actor and Best Actress ultimately went the same way as the Baftas, perhaps due to voter's neglecting Boseman under the assumption that he was a sure fire win or genuine love for the now oldest ever actor to win for this category: 83-year-old Hopkins. However, the Welsh actor was a no show at the ceremony. Maybe he was doing some more painting.

Predicted winner: Chadwick Boseman - Ma Rainey's Black Bottom

Chadwick Boseman had been the favourite for Best Actor since Ma Rainey's Black Bottom was released on Netflix in November 2020. After the tragic death of Boseman, this final performance would be the only way to acknowledge the incredible contribution that this iconic actor had on cinema. Until recently this win for such an emotive and intense performance seemed a guarantee, but with Anthony Hopkins picking up the BIFA and Bafta this signalled the way it was going to ultimately go...

Rightful winner: Riz Ahmed - Sound of Metal

Riz Ahmed is one of Britain's finest actors, turning his hand to small indie films (Four Lions, Mogul Mowgli) and blockbusters (Rogue One, Venom) with the same amount of extraordinary dedication to the craft. Sound of Metal is his finest performance to date; immersing himself in American Sign Language, learning the drums from scratch and bringing to life the emotional turmoil of the protagonist. Hopkins was a deserving winner, but Ahmed gives the performance of a lifetime as Ruben Stone and it was a shame it went unrewarded.
