Oscars 2021 Results: All The Major Winners (And Who Should Have Really Won)

2. Best Actress - Frances McDormand

Nomadland 2021
Searchlight Pictures

Frances McDormand was quick to bat away a standing ovation as she approached the stage and - in a race that was so incredibly close it could literally have gone to anyone - was even quicker to get off stage. She kept the speech remarkable short, clearly not as fond of the limelight as her fellow A-Listers, ending with the phrase: "I like work. Thank you for knowing that, and thanks for this."

Predicted winner: Frances McDormand - Nomadland

At the start of the awards seasons, McDormand looked like the favourite with this film garnering a lot of Oscar-buzz. However, after losing the Golden Globe, the Critics' Choice Award and the Screen Actors Guild Award McDormand's chances were at an all time low. After scooping up the Bafta there was a glimmer of hope for the Nomadland star, but in an Oscar race that had five actresses with an equal shot at taking home the statuette my initial prediction looked extremely unlikely.

Rightful winner: Frances McDormand - Nomadland

Ultimately, McDormand scooped up her third Best Actress win and looking at the diverse range of characters she has won for it is no wonder why. First winning for her off kilter comedic chops in Fargo, she then followed this up with a mother seeking revenge in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri before winning for the kind lonely soul she portrayed in Nomadland. If simply reading about this range does not demonstrate why she deserved to take home the Oscar then you need to revisit these films to witness it first hand.
