Oscars 2021 Results: All The Major Winners (And Who Should Have Really Won)

1. Best Picture - Nomadland

Nomadland 2021
Searchlight Pictures

When Sound of Metal picked up Best Editing (an award that has historically pointed to which film will pick up Best Picture), there was a flicker of doubt as to whether Nomadland would pick up the big award. However, Chloé Zhao triumphed for the second time (out of four nominations) and scooped up Best Picture to accompany her Best Director statuette. Alongside Zhao, Frances McDormand made her first of two appearances on the stage to pick up Best Picture ending her speech with a charmingly unexpected wolf howl.

Predicted winner: Minari

Although it is easy to say now that Nomadland was the clear favourite, early on The Trial of the Chicago 7 and Minari looked like they could have posed a serious threat to its chances to win Best Picture. Having incorrectly predicted Minari as the Best Picture winner - perhaps coming too soon after another South Korean family-based drama Parasite picked up the same award last year - Nomadland was clearly the only other drama that could have picked up this honour.

Rightful winner: Minari

Nomadland and Minari were both equally worthy to receive the top honour at the Academy Awards, with both examining American identity in extremely differently ways. For me, Minari just about inches it over Nomadland because - aside from looking beautiful and telling an incredibly specific yet universal story - it managed to be a heart-breaking yet simultaneously uplifting film.
