Who Should Win: Two Distant Strangers
Pretty much all five shorts would be worthy winners here, but Two Distant Strangers is especially eye-opening with its collision of timely themes and an ambitious premise.
Centered around a young Black man trapped in a time loop which ends with him being shot and killed by a white police officer, what it lacks in subtlety it more than compensates with its brutally effective execution.
Who Will Win: Two Distant Strangers
The doc was acquired and released by Netflix mere weeks before the Oscar voting deadline closed, so despite mighty competition from the Oscar Isaac-starring The Letter Room in particular, it benefitted from being at the front of voters' minds when they cast their ballots.
