Oscars 2022: 10 Fan Favourite Category Nominees Ranked From Least To Most Likely To Win

1. Spider-Man: No Way Home

Of course it's going to be Spider-Man: No Way Home. Spider-Fans were already calling for the film to be awarded Best Picture before this year's nominations were even announced. When it got a single nomination for visual effects, the floodgates opened as commentators like Kevin Smith and Jimmy Kimmel pointed to the "snub" as evidence that the Academy had lost touch.

Except, it hasn't really has it? Although it didn't win, Black Panther was nominated for a Best Picture Oscar. It felt like a bold new vision, combining superhero tropes with an Afrofuturist aesthetic rarely seen in big-budget commercial cinema. Academy voters recognised this and nominated it appropriately. Into the Spider-Verse won the Best Animated Picture in 2019 for goodness sake! Logan was up for Best Adapted Screenplay!

As hugely enjoyable as Spider-Man: No Way Home is, it's the 9th Spider-Man film in 21 years. For all intents and purposes, it's a big studio popcorn movie that isn't doing anything new or exciting. But that doesn't stop Marvel stans being aggrieved at the perceived snobbery about superhero movies. That can whip up a real frenzy, which will be reflected in the voting.

Spider-Man is the most likely winner of the new Fan Favorite category, but is "Most Dedicated Fanbase" really a metric the Academy should be adopting?
