Oscars 2022: 10 Fan Favourite Category Nominees Ranked From Least To Most Likely To Win
7. The Suicide Squad
Twitter, and the director's historic use of it, was behind James Gunn's removal from The Guardians of the Galaxy 3 by Disney back in 2018. Alt-right journalists had dragged up some decades old tweets from Gunn, for which he'd profusely apologised. When his removal from the project was announced, fans of the director circulated a petition for his reinstatement and crowdfunded a billboard asking for Disney to rehire him. People power won out, and Gunn was rehired for the next Guardians movie.
That same people power is behind The Suicide Squad's nomination as a Fan Favorite. The perceived snobbery around superhero movies probably has a part to play as well, and nominating Gunn's off-kilter anti-superhero movie is a strong statement. Not least because Gunn was offered the director's chair by Warner Brothers after he was let go by Disney. Much like Sing 2, it's easy to see this as DC's scrappy, rugged underdog to Marvel's Spider-Man celebration.
But despite this old-school DC v.s Marvel tribalism, if any comic-book movie is going to lift the trophy on Sunday night, it will be Disney and Marvel's Spider-Man: No Way Home. But more on that later...
